Colonial Cafe sits comfortably in the heart of Dandenong South’s industrial precinct, serving as a practical, no-fuss spot for workers and locals needing a reliable coffee and hearty meal. This is a cafe that suits the busy morning crowd, especially those starting their week here, as well as the lunchtime rush where grabbing something substantial and satisfying is key.

The atmosphere leans toward functional and welcoming rather than trendy — it’s the kind of place where the staff recognize regular faces and call customers by name. You’ll often find familiar groups from nearby businesses popping in for a coffee that’s consistently well-prepared, alongside the quick, friendly service that feels lived-in and genuine.

Food-wise, Colonial Cafe stands out due to its broad menu variety, which is larger than many other cafes in similar industrial areas. The options stretch from the breakfast essentials like egg-and-bacon items served in different formats (muffins, rolls, wraps, or toast) to more substantial sharing platters such as the Sandwich Platter and Asian Tasting Platter. This versatility means it caters to varied tastes and dietary needs within a largely working professional clientele.

Those who visit for lunch will appreciate the mix of light and more filling dishes — from fresh fruit and cheese & antipasto platters to heartier items like marinated skewers and burgers, which locals have particular praise for. The food comes with a straightforward presentation that suits quick dining without pretense but without sacrificing freshness.

Given its location, Colonial Cafe works best during weekday mornings and lunch periods, serving as a dependable base for workers who want their coffee on point and a meal that can energize a long day on-site. It’s less a spot for lingering but more a place where familiarity, variety, and solid flavours meet the practical needs of a bustling industrial neighborhood.

I have the pleasure of working nearby this cafe every Monday morning and every time I walk in the ladies great me nicely and are super lovely. I grab my coffee which is always spot on and sometimes pop back to grab lunch. They’re the sweetest ladies, highly recommend.

The biggest variety of food you can find in a cafe in an industrial area, always fresh and well presented. Options for any dietary requirements, noteworthy the three different displays, breakfast/brunch hot food, 4 different ways to eat eggs and bacon, in a muffin, roll, wrap or even in a toast, simply great. The lunch section with rice/noodles dishes, chicken, beef and pork roast meat and the cold section with sandwiches of any kind, salads and sweets. You can also ask for freshly made dishes of your choice.

I've worked in the area for over 6 years and I have been on and off coming here for as long. When businesses are bought out, things are bound to change. Sometimes for the best, other times not so much. Every second item seems to drip with grease, even if it probably shouldn't or it is dry beyond saving. Prices are hiked up at random times which I understand, but your staff don't really understand consumer law making it difficult not to get into a debate over 50 cents or a dollar. They advertise the lower price for days and weeks... Breakfast is almost always the best, however I have had some greasy muffins and once they were dry beyond comprehension. This place is a lifesaver when you're hungover but otherwise I would no longer recommend it as highly. Good thing I suppose, I don't have to watch my weight by avoiding this place. At least the staff are mostly good

Nice food, friendly staff, a few tables if you want to eat in. I noticed that they will cook something for you if it is not in the Bain Marie. I paid $15 dollars for a lasagna and drink, I don't know if this is expensive as I haven't visited a take away shop for a long time.
